How do I embed a video?

Recently, video has become an extremely accessible and popular medium on the Internet. Embedding videos from sites such as YouTube is easy, free, and can add a lot of value and interest to your article.

When to Embed a Video

When you think about embedding a video clip in your article, you should follow the same rule as for photos: Use it to demonstrate, not just decorate. Videos can distract your readers by drawing their attention and disturbing the flow of reading.

So when you decide to embed a video into your article, try to make it an integral part of your content.

How to Embed a Video

  1. Find a video you would like to embed. You can find this on a variety of websites, such as Youtube, Metacafe, and Dailymotion.
  2. Always preview the video and make sure it is suitable before you decide to include it in your article
  3. There will usually be a box entitled "Embed" or "Embeddable Player" containing a snippet of HTML code used to embed the video in an online article
  4. Highlight the entire code (Ctrl +A) within the box
  5. Copy the code (Ctrl +C)
  6. Paste (Ctrl +V) the code exactly where you want it to appear in the article

You will not be able to view the video player in your word processor, but, if the above steps are completed properly, you will be able to see the video in the final published version.
