Pdd-nos: A Parent's Struggle

PDD-NOS can be hard to accept because the child/person can be so highly functioning. After years of unsuccessful counseling, I was finally given a diagnosis that fit - so how to accept this? What does it mean? Where do I go from here. This is a beginning of a series of articles focusing on parenting a child with PDD-NOS, gaining acceptance and finding resources and help.

Best of Friends

This picture is of a 143 pound bullmatiff Mr. Wendle and his favorite buddy Vern the 20 lb cat. You would never think such a large animal would be so sentimental and sweet. While standing his gaze can make the strongest go weak. The look of strength from muscles and stance could make even the bravest want to run the other way. But he's a big softie. He prefers quiet relaxing days with his family, lounging around with kitties, sitting on the sofa next to his favorite humans - or even better - dog-piling into the bed to watch tv! I caught these two in the crate together. Wherever Wendle goes, Vern tries to follow. Vern thinks he's a dog. Wendle thinks he's a cat. The two are a comical pair. It reminds me of the fox & hound, when the song plays, "they're the best of friends, having so much fun together, they're not even aware, they're such a funny pair, life's one happy game!". Their ending will be much happier though, living out life with one another as friends.

Winooski River, Winooski, Vermont

On vacation visiting back home I found this cute touristy spot that overlooks the river right after the dam. This picture is just a small part of the beauty in Vermont. If you ever want to get away, enjoy the calm relaxing mountains and bodies of water, including waterfalls, Vermont is a great place to go. Follow Route seven north to south, taking a few turns off it to explore different towns. As long as you are on a paved road, you won't get truly lost - but you will feel lost in a different world as you drive through tree-shaded roads, winding, twisting through natures beauty.

Some people believe we are here as a test for some great after life. Some people don't believe in God. Either way, once we become adults what is life all about anyway?

Autism - PPD NOS - Diagnosis or Label?

When psychiatrists, therapists and doctors can't figure something out - do they just hand out a label and give up? How do we really know what is going on inside our child's mind?

Some relationships can be tough. Tougher than others. Sometimes they weren't meant to be but we struggle and hold onto anything to try to make them work. Sometimes we need to learn to be strong enough to walk away. Sometimes this is for the best.

This is for anyone fighting a chronic illness. I wrote this in May 2007 when I first learned I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It may feel like the end of the world - but it is not. I hope this gives hope to others with MS or other illnesses.
