Soren Kierkagaard and Faith

Soren Kierkegaard was a revolutionary Danish thinker who outlined the path to achieving true faith. The path he hypothesized included three stages. Each stage was argued to be morally (not ethically) greater than the last. As life progresses, people tend to move from one stage to another, although most people will remain stuck on the second stage. Only a lucky few will manage to make it to the third stage which is true faith.

Paul Tillich and Faith

Paul Tillich’s definition of faith is one that is ambiguous at first. He defines faith as the centered act of being ultimately concerned. He explains in his book Dynamics of Faith that faith does not always have religious content. One can be faithful toward their nation or money or success. He approaches the idea of faith from an almost secular point of view though the ambiguity of his definition can be dissolved if one looks upon faith as an ultimate concern for the ultimate reality. He says in his book, “The content of faith matters infinitely for the life of the believer, but it does not matter for the formal definition of faith".

Nuclear Weapons: a Complicated Question

The question of whether or not nuclear weapons should be a part of this world has been widely debated. There is no real right answer to the question when it is contemplated deeply enough. It can be a simple morality question or for many people including myself, it is a moral dilemma. On the one hand, nuclear weapons do damage life everywhere and threaten an end to the world but on the other hand, they did end a war and they do deter further war among the superpowers. Either way, this is not a question that is to be considered on only the moral level. It makes more sense when thought of from an international standpoint when taking the politics of the world into account.

What is the Atkins Diet?

In the late 20th century, a new diet designed by Dr. Robert Atkins caught on. The Atkins diet, as it came to be known, was the first of the low-carbohydrate diets. The diet is radically different from most and appears to be almost paradoxical. Rather than cutting down on what you eat, the diet simply requires that you don’t eat carbohydrates and instead increase protein and fat intake.
