Warm 103: 2009 March of Dimes Walk Rudy Park, York PA

I am not sure what this is about but I believe the blonde is Kelly, one of the on the air people. Heck, it is hard to see them on radio. These people work very hard with these events and they were unwinding after the event. If someone from WARM sees this and can shed some light on it I will post it. Update: As of late September 2009 Kelly is no longer an on the air for WARM 103 – a victim of the flying fickle finger of fate called ratings.

I'm a ham operator and we help out with things like the March of Dimes walk. Click Ham Radio below for more on this subject.

Lutheran Church Boiling Springs - Now a Flower Shop

This church is now a flower shop. Not the greatest but better than an x-rated movie theatre like in Galeton. This was constructed in 1875.

Two Stationary Gas Engines at Williams Grove

This display shows the size variation of the stationary gas engines used on the farm. The smaller one will be about one HP, the larger not more than ten. The rubber tired carriage is not period, but these were on wheels, probably in this case four wheels with two axels, one of them pivoted so that it could be pulled by horses. This is one very large hunk of iron. Imagine OHSA and the open pulleys and belts! Another smaller engine (green) in the background is on the kind of cart I mentioned. One of the yellow wheels can be seen. Unfortunately I did not see the relevance and take another picture.

Farmall Diesel Tractor with Dad and Daughter

I remember when the Farmall line was the little tractor. Today the line includes this relatively large diesel. Note the driver and his helper. She may be the farmer of the future. Girls in this area are participating in farming, not in the classic role but driving machinery including some of the largest on the field during the push times. This girl is getting a head start at learning what it is like on a tractor and I would bet this is not the first trip.

Brick Late 1800s Home in York Springs

I love this home. The main roof is slate, the porch the seemed iron sheeting. It isn't in mint condition but the owner takes significant pride. Some work has been done to preserve the mortar and brick. The chimney to the left may be a replacement. I can’t prove it but it almost looks like the left end was extended about five feet, probably not long after the home was built. I can’t imagine why this small an increment for a significant amount of work.

Home with a Second Story Porch

We must remember that many of these homes were built before air conditioning. Note this one with the balcony. The home faces nearly due east so during the afternoon this would be shaded as would the porch below. I am in a quandary if the lower porch was originally there – the wooden floor speaks to that but the way it is on a Cape style home does not fit the time it was built. But it is still interesting.

Large Double Home in York Springs

I looked at this home several times before I saw it. This was once two homes, mirror image with about a six foot walkway between them. Note the porches. Someone bought both, tied them together to get some extra floor space and converted them to apartments. If you look carefully you can see where the slate roof was patched together. This is an interesting setup. The two homes probably date to the early 1900s.
